1986 - Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes On Takeoff

On January 28, 1986 the space shuttle Challenger exploded and broke apart just 73 seconds into its tenth mission, resulting in the death of all seven crew members, including civilian school teacher, Christa McAuliffe. Scheduled to become the first teacher in space, 100’s of schools across the nation witnessed the disaster live on TV. The accident led to a two-and-a-half year grounding of the shuttle fleet; flights resumed in 1988.
